LIPOHYPERTROPHY

lipohypertrophy

Lipohypertrophy is a medical term that refers to the accumulation of extra fat at the site of many subcutaneous injections of insulin. It is a common, minor, chronic complication of diabetes mellitus.

Injection site hypertrophy is several cm across, rounded, and firmer than ordinary subcutaneous fat. The major component is adipose tissue, as insulin exerts a hypertrophic effect on adipose cells. To stimulate lipohypertrophy, persons with diabetes mellitus shouldn’t rotate their injections among different areas.
